Do You Need a California Permit as an Adult?

First time drivers over 18 need a California Permit.

License applicants, regardless of age, who do not hold a current, valid license from another U.S. State must first apply for a California Driving Permit. This includes first time drivers who are 18 years of age or older.

New drivers over 18 have two options when applying for their California Driving Permit:
