1. Early on do no waste your gold on re-rolling. Accumulating gold and having a strong economy is vital for the mid/late game.
Your goal is to accumulate 40 gold.
After that any extra spend it on levels for starters and when necessary re-rolling. Depending on your strategy you need stronger pieces (level 2 pieces) or you simply need as high of a level as possible (if you're going aqirs for example you want to reach level 7 courier asap).

Do not set yourself on 1 strategy at the beginning of the game. You will need to adapt based on what others are building as well. For example, if there are 3 players going for Undeads, you should not go for that.
